Cheap Wireless Internet

I have to update this page, but what it is, is my buddy "Z" has high speed Internet a few blocks away, and this just feeds from his house to mine for Internet.

No, its perfectly legal, especially since ch 1 - 6 are amateur radio frequencies that I am using, and I currently have an advanced license for a technician.

it seems to work fairly well, but I now have a glitch, since a neighbor is building next door, his garage is in the way, so my signal is weak these days.  I figure with a bit of antenna work I can clean this up a bit.

Up in this tree is my older box with my homemade antenna.  I am going to build a newer remote unit and see if it will help clean up my data rates.

One problem I have had in the past on the first unit is in the middle of the summer it seems to cut-out as it gets really hot out.  I think the box is trapping too much heat.  So for this unit I have put a fan drawing the air out, and filters for incoming air.  Should help.

This time around, I decided to place a proper antenna onto the box.  Its a corner reflector as I am trying to keep the coverage as directional as I can.  All it needs to do is see a path from my buddies house to mine for our link.

Well here is the guts of the project.  Its a linksys WAP54G access point with modified firmware.  I used the mustdie version of firmware.  Works very well and it also enables me to increase the transmit power on the Linksys.  The big grey thing on the top is actually an old computer power supply capacitor.  I figured it would not hurt to put it on the power supply to keep the power clean.  With a cap this big it also keeps the unit stable in brown-outs.

Before I placed the Linksys board into this box, I coated the whole circuit board with a clear coating.  The coating I find works well is clear rockgaurd (used for automotive painting/protection).  The only spots not protected is my power plug and the heat sink I added to the voltage regulator.  in the power plug, it has grease in it to protect it from the elements.  You can dunk this board under water and it will still function!
