Well, asterisk can build a server that has all the features of Vonage. It used SIP phones or IAX. If you have a high speed internet connection you can build the server and add telephones as extensions on it as much as you would like.
Right now I use a Linksys P2P ATA to give me two lines
In the Asterisk, you can add outbound trunks to whatever providers you wish to use. This is great because you can choose long distance providers, and from an unlimited amount of them. Then you can add dialing rules that would steer the calls to the best outbound provider.
Also you can add as many ATA or IP phones you wish to connect to the Asterisk server. I like the ATA because I have plugged in a cordless phone that was extremely cheap to buy from XScargo.ca.
For my provider I use Mutualphone for long distance, but my local calls grab a line out from my Asterisk not using any provider at all. This way all local calls are free and unlimited minutes.
